TwitterCover_Final2_SQ- Shrek(Fredericton) Theatre New Brunswick concludes its 2016-2017 season with a production of the award-winning comedic hit, Shrek, The Musical on stage at the Fredericton Playhouse, May 4-6, 2017.

“Based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks Animation film, Shrek the Musical is a TONY Award-winning fairy tale adventure,” said TNB Theatre School Director Tania Breen. “Hilariously funny, fast-paced and full of big magical moments, but at its core, Shrek is a surprisingly timely story of friendship, overcoming prejudice and being true to who you really are.”

The Senior Musical Theatre (SMT) program at TNB Theatre School is made up of students grades 9-12, the most advanced and accomplished performers from TNB Theatre School’s 300+ students. Many of them have been with the theatre school since entering the public school system.

What’s so special about this production is that it is entirely built to support the young people of the SMT class,” said TNB Artistic Director Thomas Morgan Jones. “Rehearsals begin in September and the final production is a beautiful celebration of their journey together as a company and as individuals. Whether these young artists have been with the Theatre School since age five or have joined as recently as the Fall, Shrek will be a place where they can find inspiration, artistic challenge, friendship and community.  This is the essence of the Theatre School, and it will be on stage for the entire Fredericton community to see.”

Each Senior Musical Theatre production marks the end of Theatre New Brunswick’s season and continues to be one of the most popular productions of the whole year.  For this production, students are given the company’s full support as a way of providing the most professional theatre experience for both the audience and the performers.  This year’s students will be supported by professional lighting, projection, set and wardrobe designers in addition to a full orchestra.

By welcoming the very best professional directors, designers, crafts people and musicians to support these young people, audiences can expect a production of the highest standard,” said Jones. “All of this supporting 40 students on stage – a cast size that most theatres could only dream of!  All of this, right here in Fredericton!”

This production is made possible through the support of Downtown Fredericton and Stantec.
