New Voices: Our Playwrights. Our Stories.

25 June 2009

Fredericton, NB Theatre New Brunswick is pleased to announce a new initiative to highlight fresh voices and new works from emerging and established playwrights. TNB New Voices is an exciting province-wide call for short plays which will be considered for production as Main Stage Opening Acts for TNB’s 2010-2011 season.

At the helm of this project is Artistic Producer Caleb Marshall.  In 1993, Marshall introduced New Brunswick audiences to Forgotten Faces, a theatrical experiment that brought together some of the province’s best playwrights to celebrate the stories that have shaped our history. Out of that project came two works that will be featured as the inaugural Main Stage Opening Acts for TNB’s 2009-2010 season: LaTour by Norm Foster, and Bad Water by M. Anne Mitton.

I asked each playwright to write a short, true New Brunswick story and the result was a rich cross-section of various styles of theatre, time periods, and cultural backgrounds,” said Marshall . “We have so many great stories waiting to be told, and I'm hoping that the same criteria will once again produce great results."

Part of Theatre New Brunswick ’s mission is to create extraordinary theatre while celebrating New Brunswick ’s best theatre artists. TNB New Voices offers playwrights the opportunity to have New Brunswick plays professionally produced.

New Brunswick has a rich and diverse history full of stories waiting to be brought to life. Submissions may be tales from our past or present, but they must be based on a true New Brunswick story.  They may also incorporate intimate and domestic themes, or subjects large in historic scope.
