A whimsical love story – told over 60 years. Once upon a time there was a young woman living in a small town. She was shy and lonely. Once upon a time there was a priest living in the same small town. He too was shy and lonely. A dinner date. A confession. A courageous pursuit of dreams spanning 60 years – all told through physical theatre without the use of props or costume changes.
(Fredericton) Theatre New Brunswick kicks off a brand new season of professional theatre with the world premiere production of the play, A Sunday Affair, October 13-23, 2016 at the Open Space Theatre.
This production sees the company starting a new season of theatre on a very strong note. A Sunday Affair marks the company’s first co-production with Caraquet’s Théâtre populaire d’Acadie, which will tour a French language version of the play throughout the province following TNB’s largest tour in over a decade with performances in Bathurst, Fredericton, McAdam, Miramichi, St. Andrews and Woodstock, NB.
“This play, for me, is a burst of pure happiness,” said TNB Artistic Director Thomas Morgan Jones. “We rehearsed for two weeks in Caraquet this summer to create the specific physicality of the play and so that the composer could create alongside the actors. During that entire process, we all marveled at how much joy there was in this story, and also in the spirit we were all bringing to making the play.”
Blending elements of physical theatre to form an almost Chaplin-esque delivery, A Sunday Affair is the story of a 60 year friendship between Father Tom and Josephine.
“It is two actors with no props and little set – only their bodies, mime, movement, text, music and facial expressions to tell the story,” said Jones. “Rather than feeling empty, the theatre feels full, full to bursting with the energy of these two remarkable performers. I absolutely cannot wait to share it with audiences.”
A Sunday Affair opens October 13, 2016 at Fredericton’s Open Space Theatre, 55 Whiting Road.
