The 39 Steps

Mix a Hitchcock masterpiece with a juicy spy novel, add a dash of Monty Python, and you have The 39 Steps, a fast-paced whodunit for anyone who loves the magic of theatre! Adapted by Patrick Barlow, from the novel by former Canadian Governor General John Buchan, this two-time Tony Award winner is packed with laughs and over 150 zany characters. The New York Times calls it “theatre at its finest” while The New York Post raves it is “inventively astonishing, riotous and marvelous!”
This play is opened by The Smokey Mokes, a winning submission from Rick Merrill for TNB New Voices call for true New Brunswick stories. The Smokey Mokes takes us backstage during the controversial “black face” minstrel group’s final performance at The Fredericton Playhouse, as they come to terms with why it was time to take the make-up off.
The 39 Steps ran October 13-16, 2011 at The Fredericton Playhouse.
“Theatre New Brunswick knows how to start the season with a bang… The 39 Steps was wonderfully entertaining.” Julia Whalen, The Aquinian
“THAT kind of performance is why I’m a drama student!! Thank you a million times!!”
“Awesome, and extremely funny! Great job TNB!”
